Mackinac Island maples defy arboreal rules. Turn fluorescent orange & wildly shimmy to winds off Lake Huron. All unite & boldly refuse to shed leaves.
Original tune composed & performed by Kitty Allen on pedal harp, flute, midi-keyboard, laptop & toothbrush.
I composed, performed & recorded this tune after a late fall visit to Mackinac Island in Michigan. Though I've visited & enjoyed trips to the island before, this adventure was exceptional and particularly inspiring. The foliage, while displaying all of the requisite colors, remained clinging to the trees even though it was late October.
A special thank you to Diane Sullivan for joining me on this thoroughly enjoyable excursion.

Dedicated to Kevin--a beautiful, though disgruntled, draft horse pulling carriages at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan during the summer of 2014. Horses in photo above are not Kevin, though they are working draft horses on the island, which - delightfully - does not allow cars. When photo requests were spoken to Kevin, he responded by curling his upper lip to display very large front teeth.
Kevin is a team member of a working equine duo. He routinely bites his companion horse, grabs the reins of the carriage from his driver, & snorts with displeasure throughout his work shift. Why? Presumably because his former teammate & friend recently retired at the age of 30 (a significant age for a working draft horse).
May Kevin find peace & contentment with music, carrots, licorice & several months of rest--soon to arrive as the island season quickly comes to a close.

Original tune composed & performed by Kitty Allen on midi-keyboard & laptop--with special effects. This is not about elaborate melody & form. It's a vamp, simple melody & electronic effects. Created & performed with the individual mentioned below in mind.
For Mike--TV engineer extraordinaire at VA Boston, WCVB, WGBH & more. Happy times--roommate in a women's dorm, no money, shaggy dogs, boxy brown Volvo & a small house on a cliff. RIP quiet & good man.

Original tune composed, arranged & performed by Kitty Allen on alto flute(s), midi-keyboard & laptop. Alto flute trio inspired by frequent sightings of playful Belted Galloway cows on a scenic dairy farm in Easton, CT.

A traditional older hymn composed by George Bennard (music and lyrics) in 1912. Arranged & performed by Kitty Allen on harp, flute, midi-keyboard, analog synthesizer, & laptop.
For my old Toledo pal, James. RIP, my friend.
The Old Rugged Cross
Lyrics
Verse 1
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.
Refrain - repeat after each verse
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.
Verse 2
O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary.
Refrain
Verse 3
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
a wondrous beauty I see,
for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,

Original tune composed & performed by Kitty Allen on midi-keyboard & laptop. Inspired by a recent trip to Rome & Florence, Italy. Though the lion looks ferocious, he was actually quite gentle & very well-hydrated. Thank you, Sue Altman, for the invitation. The roar is for you.
