Silent Night is a traditional & popular German Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. First performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas Parish Church in Oberndorf, a village on the Salzach River in Austria, the original manuscript has been lost, though a manuscript in Mohr's handwriting was discovered in 1995. Dated by researchers at circa 1820, the manuscript shows that Mohr wrote the lyrics in 1816 and Gruber composed the melody in 1818.

Incorporating influence, mood, & observation from the recent super moon, this arrangement & performance includes tracks of didgeridoo box, midi-keyboard, finger cymbals, laptop, assorted bottles (tuned), C flute, alto flute, pedal harp, & toothbrush.

Inspired during several strolls throughout Prenzlauer Berg in northeastern Berlin. This composite sculpture changed from day to day as the general public attached additional components according to individual whim. Containing a mix of auto parts & miscellaneous detritus including gaskets, pipes, valves, & tubes, this sassy frau personified an ever-changing dynamic characteristic of this vibrant neighborhood.

This tune evolved from a visit to unofficially named "Graffiti Street" in Ghent, Belgium. Actually called the Werregarenstraatje, it is one of many sanctioned artistic expressive areas in this creative city. All over you find walls, gateways, and cobblestones  covered in colors, paintings, & poetry. Some works are tags and others are true artistic pieces that invite you to stop, look, & appreciate. Given the popularity of the area to visitors & artists, what is visible one week may likely be covered and replaced by the following week.

The photo highlights the detached spine of a 50+ year old Merriam Webster  School Dictionary. Still living on a stand ready for reference use, it has certainly seen better days. Next to the dictionary is another  book with  dog-eared cover & chewed pages. Next to that, a yellow-paged paperback.  All in need of repair or.....the discard bin?

This tune is dedicated to old, damaged & forgotten library books everywhere. May they be read and appreciated until they disintegrate - or are replaced with an online resource.
