When the wrought-iron lattice Eiffel Tower was built in Paris, France (1887-1889), it was constructed as the centerpiece of the 1889 World's Fair. Also, it crowned the centennial anniversary of the French Revolution. During construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to become the tallest man-made structure in the world. This title was held for 41 years until the Chrysler Building in New York City was completed in 1930. Next, a broadcasting antenna was added to the top of the Eiffel Tower in 1957. This transmitter then left the tower 5.2 meters (seventeen feet) higher than the Chrysler Building. The Eiffel Tower became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
